INCI: Camellia Sinensis Leaf Water |  Botanical: Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze  |  Plant Part: Leaves  |  Extraction: Steam Distillation  |  Type: Hydrosol / Floral Water / Distillate Water

Phase: Water phase (aqueous). Not oil-soluble. Add to water phase of emulsion formulations.

Functions: Skin Conditioning Agent | Toning Agent | Humectant (minor) | Fragrance (mild herbal aroma) | Antioxidant carrier

Used In: Facial Toner | Face Mist | Body Mist | Hair Rinse | Makeup Setting Spray | Emulsion Water Phase | Aloe Vera Gel Base | Clay Mask Activation Liquid

PRESERVATION REQUIRED: Hydrosols are water-based. Add a preservative system before use in any finished cosmetic product.

Benefits

•        Contains water-soluble plant compounds from Camellia sinensis including catechins and polyphenols, which are the antioxidant-active compounds responsible for green tea's established antioxidant profile in cosmetic literature. The concentration in a hydrosol is lower than in a standardised extract but present and functionally relevant in water-based cosmetic applications.

•        Provides a soothing skin feel when applied as a toner or facial mist, consistent with the established skin conditioning function of Camellia sinensis-derived ingredients in the COSING database and multiple secondary formulation sources.

•        Functions as a hydrating and skin conditioning base in the water phase of emulsion formulations, replacing or partially replacing distilled water with a botanically enriched alternative that contributes mild antioxidant activity alongside the hydration function.

•        The mild earthy-herbal aroma contributes a subtle botanical fragrance to finished toner and mist products without the intensity of an essential oil, making it appropriate for sensitive skin formulations where strong fragrance is a concern.

•        Functions as a natural activation liquid for clay mask formulations, replacing plain water with a botanically enriched alternative that adds the antioxidant profile of green tea to the absorbent cleansing function of the clay.

•        Suitable as a hair rinse after shampooing, contributing scalp conditioning and a mild astringent effect from the polyphenol content, and as a base for natural hair mists and leave-in conditioning sprays.

How to Use

As a Standalone Facial Toner or Mist: Green Tea Hydrosol can be used directly as a facial toner or face mist. However, a suitable preservative system must be added before use since the hydrosol is water-based and will support microbial growth without preservation. Add a broad-spectrum preservative at the supplier's recommended usage rate before packaging. Store in a refrigerator after opening if no preservative is added. Do not use an unpreserved hydrosol beyond 2 weeks after opening.

In Emulsion Formulations: Use Green Tea Hydrosol as all or part of the water phase in creams, lotions, and serums at 10 to 90% of the water phase depending on the desired botanical activity level. Add the hydrosol to the water phase before combining with the oil phase. The preservative system in the finished emulsion will protect the hydrosol component.

As Clay Mask Activation Liquid: Use Green Tea Hydrosol instead of plain water or rose water when activating a clay mask powder blend. Mix with the clay immediately before use. The antioxidant compounds from the hydrosol complement the absorbent cleansing function of the clay. No separate preservation required for single-use activation.

As a Hair Rinse: Dilute 1 part Green Tea Hydrosol with 2 to 3 parts water. Use as a final rinse after shampooing and conditioning. Apply to scalp and hair, leave for 1 to 2 minutes, and rinse with cool water.

Preservation Note for Formulators: Green Tea Hydrosol is a water-based ingredient. Any finished cosmetic product containing Green Tea Hydrosol requires a suitable broad-spectrum preservative system. Suitable preservatives include Euxyl PE 9010 (Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin), Sodium Benzoate at pH below 5, or other water-phase compatible preservative systems.

Pairs Well With

Niacinamide dissolved in Green Tea Hydrosol creates the water phase of a multi-active toner targeting pore minimisation, sebum control, and antioxidant support simultaneously. The hydrosol replaces plain water as the Niacinamide carrier, adding botanical antioxidant activity to the established skin-conditioning function of Niacinamide.

Hyaluronic Acid dissolved in Green Tea Hydrosol creates a hydrating serum or toner base where the hyaluronic acid provides the film-forming moisture-binding function and the hydrosol contributes the botanical antioxidant active and the mild herbal fragrance. This combination is the foundation of a natural-positioned hydrating toner.

Aloe Vera Gel or Powder combined with Green Tea Hydrosol creates a soothing, hydrating toner base suitable for sensitive and reactive skin. Both ingredients are water-based and soothing in character, with the green tea contributing antioxidant activity and the aloe contributing the film-forming and calming function.

Euxyl PE 9010 is the recommended preservative pairing for Green Tea Hydrosol in toner and face mist formulations. At 0.5 to 1% in the finished product, it provides broad-spectrum preservation compatible with the water-based nature of the hydrosol without significantly affecting pH or sensory properties.

Kaolin Clay or French Green Clay used with Green Tea Hydrosol as the activation liquid creates a botanically enriched clay mask. The antioxidant compounds from the hydrosol are delivered to the skin alongside the absorbent cleansing function of the clay during the mask application.
