Aroma Profile: Strong, fresh, citrus-herbal lemongrass aroma. Top to middle note in fragrance blending.

Used In: Soap | Body Wash | Shampoo | Scalp Care | Massage Oil | Deodorant | Foot Care | Spa Products | Aromatherapy-Inspired Cosmetics
CITRAL ALERT: Contains naturally occurring citral — a known skin sensitiser and EU allergen. Maximum 0.1% in leave-on face products. Must be diluted before skin application.
Lemongrass Essential Oil from Cymbopogon flexuosus has one of the strongest and most distinctive citrus aromas in the essential oil range — sharper, fresher, and more intensely citrus-herbal than lemon EO or bergamot, with a characteristic grassy-green underlay. The aroma is dominated by citral (geranial and neral), which gives lemongrass its strong lemony character. It functions as a top note to middle note in fragrance blending, contributing a burst of fresh citrus that is long-lasting in soap formulations and persistently recognisable in diffuser blends. In Indian personal care formulations it is strongly associated with scalp care, foot care, and deodorising body products, and has a high consumer recognition rate across all market segments.
Benefits and Applications
• Functions as a fragrance ingredient and perfuming agent in cosmetic formulations, contributing a strong fresh citrus-herbal lemongrass aroma to soaps, shampoos, body washes, and massage oils. The high citral content gives Lemongrass EO an aroma intensity that persists well through rinse-off formulations, making it particularly effective in soap and shampoo where a clear, strong fragrance performance is required.
• In cold process and melt and pour soap making, Lemongrass EO performs well through saponification, retaining its strong citrus-herbal character in the finished bar better than many lighter citrus essential oils such as lemon or orange, which tend to fade more rapidly.
• In shampoo and scalp care formulations, Lemongrass EO is commercially well-positioned for its fresh citrus aroma and its association with scalp cleansing and refreshing products in the Indian hair care market. Use at 0.3 to 1.0% in rinse-off shampoo formulations.
• In deodorant and foot care formulations, the strong deodorising fragrance of Lemongrass EO makes it a commercially relevant active fragrance choice for body care products where long-lasting freshness is a primary consumer expectation.
• Suitable for spa and massage oil formulations where a fresh, uplifting citrus aroma is the positioning intent. At appropriate dilution in carrier oil (0.5 to 1.5% maximum for body massage), lemongrass EO delivers a strong aromatic experience appropriate for spa-inspired products.
• Compatible with vegetable oils, emulsifiers, and surfactant systems, enabling straightforward incorporation into creams, body washes, and shampoos by addition during the cool-down phase below 40 degrees Celsius.
How to Use
Dilution — Mandatory: Lemongrass Essential Oil must be diluted before any skin application. Do not apply undiluted to skin. Citral is a known sensitiser. For leave-on face products: maximum 0.1% in the finished product. For leave-on body products: up to 0.5%. For rinse-off products (soap, shampoo, body wash): 0.3 to 1.0%. For massage oils: up to 1.5 to 2.0% per IFRA guidance.
Face Product Limit — Critical: The maximum usage in leave-on face products is 0.1% of the finished formula. This is an IFRA limit based on the citral content of Lemongrass EO and its sensitisation potential. Exceeding this limit in leave-on face products creates a consumer safety risk. For face products, Lemongrass EO is a very minor fragrance addition only — not a primary active.
In Cold Process Soap: Add at 0.5 to 1.5% of total oil weight at trace. Lemongrass EO performs well through saponification and the citrus aroma persists in the finished bar.
In Shampoo and Body Wash: Add at 0.3 to 1.0% to the cooled-down formula below 40 degrees Celsius. Disperses in surfactant systems at standard usage levels. The strong aroma provides good fragrance performance in rinse-off products.
In Massage Oil: Dilute in carrier oil at maximum 1.5 to 2.0% for body massage use. For a 100ml carrier oil blend, this is 1.5 to 2.0ml of essential oil. Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before full body application.
In Clear Aqueous Products: Lemongrass EO is not water-soluble. Use a polysorbate-based solubiliser (Polysorbate 20 or 80) at a ratio of 3:1 to 4:1 (solubiliser to EO) before adding to aqueous products.
EU Allergen Declaration: Citral (geranial and neral) must be declared separately on INCI labels of EU-market finished products when present above 0.001% in leave-on and 0.01% in rinse-off products. Given Lemongrass EO is citral-dominant, this threshold will be exceeded at almost any practical usage rate.

Pairs Well With
Eucalyptus Essential Oil creates a fresh, clean, invigorating aromatic accord with Lemongrass EO that is widely used in scalp care shampoos, body washes, and spa massage oil blends. The combination of citrus-herbal lemongrass and sharp camphoraceous eucalyptus is commercially established in the Indian market for refreshing personal care positioning.
Cedarwood Essential Oil adds a warm woody base that anchors the sharp citrus top note of Lemongrass EO in massage oil and body care fragrance compositions, creating a fresh-citrus-woody accord with good tenacity on the skin surface.
Bergamot Essential Oil pairs naturally with Lemongrass EO as two citrus-family oils, creating a complex fresh citrus composition where bergamot adds a softer floral-citrus quality to the sharper lemongrass character. Suitable for premium body care and spa-positioned products.
Peppermint Essential Oil creates a sharp, intensely fresh aromatic accord with Lemongrass EO for foot care, deodorising body products, and invigorating scalp treatments. The combination addresses both freshness and the sharp clean sensation associated with effective foot and scalp care products.
Lavender Essential Oil softens and rounds the sharp
citrus character of Lemongrass EO, creating a fresh floral-citrus accord that
is more accessible for a wider consumer audience than pure lemongrass. The
combination is suitable for body lotions and massage oils where lemongrass
intensity needs moderating.
