Aroma and Fragrance Profile
Tulasi Essential Oil has a distinctive warm, spicy, clove-like aroma with a herbal basil background — different from European sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) which has a lighter, greener character. The dominant eugenol content gives Tulasi EO its characteristic clove-like warmth and depth, which makes it particularly valuable in Ayurveda-inspired fragrance compositions where the sacred basil identity is commercially significant in the Indian market. In fragrance blending it functions as a middle to top note, adding warm spicy herbal complexity to compositions. In Indian personal care Tulasi is one of the most recognised and valued Ayurvedic botanical ingredients, with strong consumer awareness across hair care, skin care, and wellness categories.
Benefits and Applications
• Functions as a fragrance ingredient and perfuming agent in cosmetic formulations, contributing a warm, spicy, clove-herbal Tulasi aroma to soaps, shampoos, hair oils, and personal care products where Ayurvedic botanical identity is a brand positioning requirement.
• Batch tested by Vedaoils: Refractive index 1.455 (within specification 1.438 to 1.480) and specific gravity 0.910 (within specification 0.892 to 0.950). Heavy metals passed. Acid value 0.42 mg KOH/g (within specification below 1.0).
• In Ayurveda-positioned hair care formulations, Tulasi EO is among the most commercially relevant botanical ingredients in the Indian market. Tulasi-named hair oils, shampoos, and scalp treatments carry strong traditional authority positioning for indie brands building Ayurvedic personal care ranges.
• In cold process and melt and pour soap making, Tulasi EO's warm spicy clove character performs reasonably well through saponification. The eugenol content can accelerate trace in cold process soap.
• In perfumery and fragrance blending, Tulasi EO adds warm spicy herbal depth to oriental and Ayurvedic fragrance compositions. It blends particularly well with sandalwood, rose, patchouli, and other warm botanical fragrance ingredients.
• The cultural and Ayurvedic significance of Tulasi in India makes it one of the most commercially valuable botanical identity ingredients for positioning personal care products within the Ayurvedic heritage category — one of the fastest-growing segments in Indian beauty.
How to Use
Dilution — Mandatory: Tulasi Essential Oil must be diluted before any skin application. Do not apply undiluted to skin. Leave-on hair oil and scalp: maximum 0.5 to 1% in carrier oil. Rinse-off shampoo and soap: 0.5 to 1.5% of total formula weight. Massage oil: 0.5 to 1% in carrier oil.
Eugenol skin sensitivity note: Tulasi EO is eugenol-dominant. Eugenol is a known skin sensitiser at higher concentrations. Use at the lower end of the usage range for leave-on products and for formulations intended for sensitive skin. Perform a patch test before full body application of finished products.
In Hair Oil: Dissolve at 0.5 to 1% in a carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, or sesame oil for authentic Ayurvedic positioning). Apply to scalp and hair as a pre-wash treatment. Sesame oil as the carrier is particularly relevant for Ayurveda-positioned Tulasi hair oil formulations.
In Cold Process Soap: Add at 0.5 to 1.5% of total oil weight at trace. Note: eugenol in Tulasi EO can accelerate trace. Have your soap batter ready and work quickly after adding. Test a small batch first.
In Shampoo: Add at 0.5 to 1% to the cooled-down shampoo base below 40 degrees Celsius.
EU Allergen Declaration: Eugenol is an EU-listed fragrance allergen. For EU-market finished products, eugenol from Tulasi EO must be declared separately on INCI labels when present above 0.001% in leave-on and 0.01% in rinse-off products. Given the typical eugenol content of 40 to 70%, this threshold will be exceeded at almost any practical usage rate.
