Benefits
• Among the highest water and oil absorption of all cosmetic clays — approximately 300 to 700% water absorption (general industry reference) — making it the strongest deep-cleansing clay available, drawing excess sebum, surface impurities, and congestion from the pore opening during face mask application more aggressively than any other clay in the CSW range.
• Swelling power confirmed at 29ml, confirming the sodium bentonite type with its characteristic expansion in water that creates a gel-like structure when activated, producing the dense, adherent paste consistency that high-performance clay masks require for effective contact with the skin surface.
• Swells significantly when activated with water, creating a thixotropic gel structure that improves adherence to the skin surface during mask application and maintains close contact throughout the drying phase, enhancing the absorbent oil-drawing function during wear time.
• Functions as a confirmed absorbent, skin conditioning agent, slip modifier, opacifying agent, anticaking agent, and viscosity increasing agent per COSING, with six confirmed functions making it highly multifunctional in mask, soap, and emulsion applications.
• Coarse particles confirmed at 0.30%, indicating a fine, homogeneous powder that disperses smoothly in formulations without gritty texture in the finished mask.
• Heavy metals confirmed compliant at NMT 50ppm, providing assurance that the product meets cosmetic-grade heavy metal limits, a critical safety parameter for a clay mineral that will be applied to the skin surface.
• Functions as a natural viscosity builder and rheology modifier in cold process soap, body wrap, and gel formulations, contributing body and a smooth, dense texture to products where structural consistency is a formulation requirement.
• Microbial limit confirmed compliant — 1.0g free from E.coli — confirming the product meets cosmetic-grade microbiological standards for a clay-based raw material.
How to Use
For Face Masks (Oily and Congested Skin): Use at 20 to 50% of the dry mask blend. Activate with water or apple cider vinegar diluted with water. For a basic bentonite mask, mix 1 to 2 teaspoons with enough water to form a paste. Apply to oily and congested areas. Leave for 5 to 15 minutes. Do not leave until fully dried on dry areas of the face. Rinse with lukewarm water. Always follow with a moisturiser. Limit to 1 to 2 times per week on most skin types. Use with caution on sensitive or dry skin areas.
Blending with Kaolin: For combination skin formulations where bentonite intensity is too high for dry areas, blend at 30% Bentonite to 70% Kaolin White Clay. This moderates the absorption significantly while retaining the deep-cleansing function for oily T-zone areas. This is the standard formulation adjustment for combination skin clay masks.
For Cold Process Soap: Pre-disperse at 1 to 3% of total oil weight in a small amount of distilled water. Add to soap batter at light trace. Bentonite contributes slip, absorbency, and a smooth skin feel in the finished bar. The pale buff colour produces a cream to off-white soap tone.
For Body Wraps: Activate with warm water at 30 to 50% of the dry blend. Apply generously to the body. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Bentonite body wraps are among the most intensive oil-absorbing and pore-cleansing body treatments available with natural mineral ingredients.
pH note: Batch pH is 9.5 — alkaline. Do not use in leave-on formulations containing pH-sensitive actives such as Vitamin C, AHAs, or BHAs without pH adjustment. In rinse-off face mask formats the alkaline pH does not present a significant concern for most skin types. Formulators building leave-on or pH-adjusted products must account for the bentonite contribution to the overall formulation pH.

Pairs Well With
Kaolin White Clay is the essential blending companion for Bentonite in any formulation targeting a broader skin type range than pure oily skin. The 70% Kaolin to 30% Bentonite ratio is the standard formulation for combination skin deep-cleansing masks — retaining enough Bentonite for meaningful oil control while moderating the drying intensity for normal and dry facial zones.
French Green Clay combined with Bentonite at equal ratios creates an ultra-high-performance cleansing mask for very oily and congested skin. Both are high-absorption clays. The combination is positioned for the most intensive deep-cleansing face mask application in the CSW clay range. Not for sensitive, normal, or dry skin.
Apple Cider Vinegar diluted with water (1 part ACV to 3 parts water) is the traditional activation liquid for Bentonite Clay masks. The mild acidity of diluted ACV partially neutralises the alkaline pH of Bentonite, making the activated mask more comfortable on the skin and bringing the pH closer to the skin's natural acid mantle during wear time. Many DIY formulation communities recommend ACV activation specifically for Bentonite.
Activated Charcoal at 2 to 5% of the dry mask blend adds pore-level adsorption of oil-based impurities alongside the high absorption of Bentonite, creating a dual-mechanism deep-cleansing mask that is positioned for the most congested oily skin types. The dark grey colour of charcoal combined with the pale buff of Bentonite produces a grey-toned mask aesthetic.
Neem Powder at 5 to 10% of the dry blend adds
antimicrobial properties to a Bentonite mask base, creating the most intensive
oil-control and antimicrobial clay mask in the CSW range. This combination
targets oily and acne-prone skin and is one of the most commercially relevant
face mask formulations for the Indian urban skin care market.
