•        Among the lowest oil absorption of all cosmetic clays at approximately 30 to 40% water absorption (general industry reference), making it suitable for all skin types including dry, sensitive, and compromised skin that would be over-dried by higher-absorption clays such as French Green Clay or Bentonite.

•        The primary mineral component is Kaolinite, a 1:1 layered aluminosilicate mineral with the formula Al2Si2O5(OH)4, giving Kaolin its characteristic white to off-white colour, soft texture, and chemically stable composition that does not swell in water — unlike smectite clays such as Bentonite or Montmorillonite.

•        Functions as a confirmed absorbent, skin conditioning agent, slip modifier, opacifying agent, anticaking agent, and viscosity increasing agent per COSING, making it one of the most multifunctional single-ingredient additions available in cosmetic formulation.

•        Functions as a white opacifying agent and colourant base in cold process soap and colour cosmetics, and when blended with naturally coloured clays such as French Green, French Pink, or Brazilian clays produces predictable intermediate tones by diluting the colour intensity of the coloured clay.

How to Use

For Face Masks: Use at 20 to 100% of the dry mask blend as a standalone or base clay. Activate with water, rose water, aloe vera gel, milk, or honey. For a basic face mask, mix 1 to 2 teaspoons with enough rose water to form a smooth paste. Apply for 10 to 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Follow with moisturiser. Suitable for all skin types and for daily use on normal skin.

As a Blending Base: Combine with higher-absorption clays to moderate their intensity for drier or more sensitive skin types. French Green Clay blended at 70% Kaolin to 30% French Green produces a balanced mask for normal to combination skin. Bentonite blended at 70% Kaolin to 30% Bentonite creates a gentle-to-moderate cleansing mask for combination skin.

For Facial Powder: Blend Kaolin at 30 to 60% with mica, silica, and other mineral powder ingredients to create loose or pressed facial powders. Kaolin contributes absorbency, mattification, coverage, and the silky skin feel characteristic of high-quality mineral powder formulations.

For Soap: Pre-disperse at 1 to 3% of total oil weight in distilled water or liquid oil. Add to soap batter at light trace. Kaolin produces a creamy white to off-white base and adds slip and a smooth texture to the finished bar.

For Baby Care: Use at 5 to 20% in baby powder formulations. Kaolin's low absorption, chemical inertness, and gentle mineral nature make it appropriate for baby skin applications. Do not use in aerosol or spray formats due to fine powder inhalation risk.

Pairs Well With

French Green Clay blended with Kaolin is the standard adjustment for formulators who find pure French Green Clay too intensive. A 70% Kaolin to 30% French Green ratio produces a balanced mask for normal to combination skin. Kaolin contributes the gentle base; French Green contributes the deep cleansing and natural green colour.

French Pink Clay blended with Kaolin creates an ultra-gentle pink-tinted mask for sensitive and very dry skin. Increasing the Kaolin proportion softens both the absorption and the colour, giving formulators precise control over how gentle and how pink the finished mask is.

Bentonite Clay blended with Kaolin at a 70% Kaolin to 30% Bentonite ratio creates a moderate cleansing mask for combination skin. Pure Bentonite is very high absorption and can be drying on any but the oiliest skin; Kaolin as the base moderates this significantly while maintaining a productive cleansing result.

Arjuna Bark Powder at 5 to 15% of the dry blend adds botanical astringency and the Ayurvedic herb story to a Kaolin base mask, creating a functional herbal face mask that uses Kaolin for structure and texture and Arjuna for the active and brand narrative.

Calamine Clay Powder blended with Kaolin at 70% Kaolin to 30% Calamine produces a gentle pink-tinted soothing mask with the combined absorbent function of both and the zinc oxide skin protecting function of the Calamine component.

Mica combined with Kaolin in facial powder and eyeshadow base formulations creates the standard mineral makeup base architecture. Kaolin provides the absorbency and flat coverage; Mica provides the light-reflecting shimmer and colour. The ratio between the two controls the balance between matte coverage and luminosity.
